      1.3 Subject description
In a world where more data and more complex data is readily available, understanding and applying the
principles of data analysis drives timely decision making which is an essential skill to any student. This
subject provides students with an introduction to data analysis, contextualised using data sources you
commonly encounter in business environments. Students cover the foundational principles of data
analysis, which are the selection, analysis and interpretation of data. The subject demonstrates that the
research question you wish to answer, drives the data selection and the analysis method. The
interpretation and clear communication of the subsequent findings ensure correct decision making,
which in turn drives business success.
1.4 Subject learning outcomes and course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, you will be able to:
describe the practical relevance of data analysis for application in business contexts
identify and outline a range of data sources, types and analysis methods relevant to business
      management
apply appropriate methods, interpret results and recommend actions to make insightful business
decisions and solve business related problems

These outcomes will contribute to your overall achievement of course learning outcomes.

CLO3: Demonstrate initiative, independence, judgement, and reflective practice with a commitment to
      lifelong learning and professional development
CLO4: Critically evaluate, interpret and communicate information, data and resources in academic and

      ASSESSMENT ITEM 2: DESCRIPTION

Assessment 2 is an Online Exam and is accessible on the LearnJCU subject site-assessment page on Friday
19th July 2024 in week 7. You can access the exam any time between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm (Singapore
time) on this date, but as soon as you start your exam, you will have 1.5 hours to complete it. You have
one attempt at this exam; once you commenced the exam, you must complete it. It cannot be saved and
      returned to later.
Our Online Exam will cover all work up to and including materials covered in Topics 4-6 within our
“Probability Theory” Unit [Figure 1]. You may need to use Excel and/or calculator to answer these
      questions.
As these tests are completed online, you need access to reliable internet. If you do not have reliable
internet, then JCU facilities can be used (either using JCU computers or using your own computer
connected to the internet via JCU WiFi on campus). It is the responsibility of the student to ensure they
have reliable access to internet and technology to undertake these assessments by the due date.
No extensions will be granted for missed exams unless under exceptional circumstances where supporting
documentation has been provided (e.g. medical certificate).
      Submission:
Be reminded that exams are timed, and from the time you start the exam, you will have 2-hours to
complete it. You cannot pause and return later. Your answer will be saved when you proceed to the next
      question.
On completion of the test, click “submit”.
If you encounter technical difficulties, immediately contact huiping.zhang@jcu.edu.au and
ltech@jcu.edu.au, and explain exactly what has or hasn’t taken place. They will prompt you for the other
pertinent details such as computer type, browser etc. Please remember to take a full screenshot of the
      issue to support your explanation.
      Important facts to remember:
** It is essential to remember your quiz access time; the quiz will only appear on LJCU under the
assessment only between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm (Singapore time) on the due date. Failing to
access the quiz during the allotted time will result in zero scores for your quiz.
2- Once you start a quiz, it cannot be paused. You must complete it within the remaining time.
Logging out of LearnJCU or closing your browser does not stop the clock.
3- If you start the quiz but leave it, close it, or simply do not answer any questions, your score will
be submitted as a zero. If you start answering questions but run out of time without finishing the
quiz, your current score will automatically be sent to your lecturer.
      Before you start:
** To avoid any technical problems such as internet drop out or screen freeze, please ensure you
are working on a PC/Mac desktop or laptop with a fast and reliable internet connection.
2- Do not attempt this test on a mobile device, tablet or smartphone.
3- Do not attempt this test on Internet Explorer.
4- Please ensure you have a LearnJCU compatible browser such as Chrome or Firefox. There is a
web browser checking tool on the login page of LearnJCU: https://learnjcu.jcu.edu.au/
5- Remember to only use navigation tools embedded in the quiz page. Do not use the back and
      forward buttons in your browser.
6- You need to complete your quiz in one session - do not leave and come back to it later.

      ASSESSMENT ITEM 3: DESCRIPTION

Similar to Assessment 2, Assessment 3 is an Online Exam and will take place within the examination
period, after we have finished our learning unit on “Inferential Statistics” which covers weeks 7-10 (Figure
1). It is designed to examine students’ knowledge on the concepts covered during that unit. You will be
presented with a case study from which several questions will be asked. It will involve multiple choice and
short answer type questions. You may need to use Excel and/or calculator to answer these questions.

      Instructions:
      1. You can access the quiz during the given access time on the due date, whose details will be
announced later. You have one attempt at this quiz; once you commenced the test, you must
complete it. This test comprises 35 multiple choice and/or fill-in-the-blanks questions that either
requires you to select an answer option from four options or provide missing word/words/ or
      values.
      2. As these tests are completed online via learnjcu, you need access to reliable internet. If you do not
have reliable internet, then JCU facilities can be used (either using JCU computers or using the

3 Submission and return of assessment
      3.1 Submission of assessment
Students must submit final assessment items in the mode specified for each piece, (including the
reference list), using the FINAL dropbox by the due date. There is only one final submission for each
assessment item. Resubmissions are not permitted, therefore students should ensure that the correct
file is submitted, as this file will constitute a submission and will be the only document marked and
graded. Incorrect submissions will not be removed, so please ensure the correct file is uploaded.

Students are responsible to ensure the upload is successful and to save a copy of the SafeAssign report
for their own records. The date and time of online submission is recorded by LearnJCU, and this is
accepted as being the equivalent to a date stamp on a hard copy submission. If system-wide technical
problems occur with SafeAssign or LearnJCU on the due date, your subject coordinator will advise you
by email and/or via announcement on LearnJCU of any necessary changes to the normal processes of
      assessment submission.

You should check your report from submission to the SELF CHECK dropbox, prior to submission to the
FINAL dropbox, as this will help you to identify areas of plagiarism or areas that have not been
accurately referenced within your assignment and rectify them prior to your final submission.

All answers of assessment tasks are submitted online through the Assessment folder at LearnJCU.

      3.2 Late submissions
The Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedure (3.1.8d) outlines a uniform formula of penalties
imposed for submission of an assessment item after the due date. This formula is 5% of the total
possible marks for the assessment item per day including part-days, weekends, and public holidays. If
submitted after 20 days, the assessment item thus would be awarded 0 marks (i.e. 5% x 20 = 100% of
total possible marks in penalties). For assessment items weighted 0%, and submitted after 10 days a
DNS (Did Not Submit) grade is awarded.

3.3 Special Consideration (including deferrals and extensions)
You are encouraged to access equity measures if you are affected by extenuating circumstances while
undertaking the subject. JCU’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedure 3.1 requires that you must
make yourself available for assessments and examinations at the scheduled times and extensions or
deferrals for an assessment item due to previously scheduled commitments such as weddings or
      holidays, will not be granted.

All Special Consideration requests can be applied for through the Special Consideration application
form. The form is linked to the Special Consideration Procedure and also available on the Student
      Forms webpage.

      3.4 Academic Integrity
As outlined in the Coursework Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure, you are required to complete
the Coursework Academic Integrity Modules available in your LearnJCU site. Penalties for non-
      completion may be applied.

All non-examination items of assessment are required to be submitted with the Assessment Declaration
available through LearnJCU. The Assessment Declaration contains statements relating to academic
integrity under the Coursework Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures.

All instances of academic misconduct are treated very seriously by the University and students may be
severely penalised for committing any form of academic misconduct.

For more information regarding academic integrity, see https://www.jcu.edu.sg/current-
      students/student-support-services/learning-support/academic-integrity-at-james-cook-university-
      singapore
      3.5 Return of assessment
The requirements for an assessment’s return date, time and manner will be determined by the Subject
Coordinator in line with the JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures.

Feedback will be given, as per clause 3.5 of the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures. You will
be informed of your grade for every component of assessment as per clause 3.5.1 and 3.5.2 of
the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures. You can also request written or verbal feedback
from the marker (see Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures 3.5).

      3.6 Review of assessment
Assessment items and final grades will be reviewed through moderation processes (Learning, Teaching
and Assessment Procedures, 3.6). It is important to be aware that assessment results “must always
undergo final ratification for each study period. No single grade or mark represents a final result in a
subject” (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures, 3.7.4.).

Audio and/or video recording of assessment (e.g. oral assessment) may be used in this subject as per
the Learning Teaching and Assessment Procedure (3.1.5f) and will be securely stored in line with
Learning Teaching and Assessment Procedure (3.8.1).

Students can seek a review of individual assessment pieces through the process identified in clause 3.8
of the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures.

Students can seek a review of the final subject result through the process contained in the Review and
Appeal of a Final Subject Result Procedure.

      3.7 Confirmation of Student Authorship
A confirmation of student authorship may apply if a lecturer suspects the student has submitted work
      that is not their own.

      4.2 Learning and teaching activities/expectations
This subject uses a combination of approaches to teaching and learning, including student centred and
teacher directed approaches. The content of the subject is disseminated using a variety of teaching
strategies including lectures, tutorials, secondary research (library and Internet), and online quizzes. The
lectures are in the form of self-paced learning. Students are expected to complete the weekly learning
materials and activities other than tutorial questions before their respective tutorial class. For each
weekly lecture, students will be made aware of the expected learning outcomes, how such outcomes
are relevant to the world of business, and the resources that support the learning outcomes of this
subject. Students learning experience is enhanced through experiential activities and active class
      participation.

Students are expected to be active participants in the learning process and are encouraged to
participate in the lectures, tutorials and undertake weekly chapter readings.

Tips on how to get a good grade
Read the assigned materials (text chapters and other documents) prior to class.
Make a copy of the slides and add extra notes from the lecture and your own reading.
Try to relate the concepts read to a current situation for a practical application of the
      theory/concepts.
Actively listen to the lectures, tutorials, presentations and discussions.
Participate in the discussions. If you participate, you will get a better understanding of the
concepts with the added bonus that you will remember the material more during exam times. We all
      learn from each other.
If you do not understand something, ask. If you are too shy or are intimidated to ask during the
lecture or tutorial, ask after class. Try to remember, there is no such thing as a silly question. If you are
confused or wondering about something presented in class, probably others are confused or wondering
about the same thing. So please, ask for clarification – help the class!
Look for practical examples of economics principles/concepts in everyday situations.
Have the right positive attitude. Your education is an investment in your future.

Learning and teaching activities may be recorded for this subject. Personal Information in the form of
images and audio may be collected by JCU during the recording. This Personal Information may appear
as part of the recording which is accessible to students and staff in this subject on LearnJCU.
